Discover the creative world of driftwood sculpture. Bring one of your own pieces or select one from my collection (or both). We will explore the process of driftwood sculpture from the selection of your piece, to cleaning, sanding, and to ultimate display.
Driftwood sculpture was developed by the First Nations on the Pacific West Coast. The driftwood we find in our lakes has been in the water and sand for tens or hundreds of years and is covered in silt and algae. It has often been discoloured by the iron in the water. It is only with cleaning and sanding that the wood begins to reveal its underlying texture and grain. A natural oil finish further highlights the dramatic beauty of the wood.
You will work on your pieces in the workshop and learn additional skills that will be helpful in working on sculptures in the future. You also will be provided resource material for further learning and skill development.
