Muskoka has been my home for over 30 years and constantly inspires me with its beauty and ruggedness. My work grows with each experience, using watercolour, India ink, soft pastel, oil or acrylic paint. I have exhibited my work in solo, group and juried shows, receiving awards for Best Use of Media and Best 2D work in show.I am captivated by colour and texture, the way light reflects on surfaces, the way a branch curves in dance-like fashion to reach the sun and shadows play with colour. I am also drawn to the energy of high contrasts.
An impressionistic quality evolves with each painting, whether representational or abstracted. My style comes from my emotion during the painting exercise and from the subject. I work from nature, recollections of time, photographs and memories. I approach a painting with a loose idea of what it will look and feel like, then sketch my thoughts into my book. When the energy of the piece feels right, I make a move to paper or canvas, using watercolour, acrylic or oil paint. There are times, however, when the sense of urgency makes me go directly to the canvas. I have grown to embrace this spontaneity with pleasure, as it leads me to new levels in painting.
