SUMMARY:Sacred Strength: Indigenous Ribbon Skirts Exhibit Presented by the Hope Arises Project
DESCRIPTION:Artist Statement by Connie Collins\, Fashion Teacher: \nSewing is becoming a lost art in this world of fast fashion. Most of my students are new to sewing\, it is not something that they grew up with. And if they do know a bit about sewing it is often their grandmother that showed them how to thread a needle or sew on a button. Experiencing this Indigenous teaching on the significance of ribbon skirts\, intentionally choosing the fabric and the ribbons\, carefully cutting to the measurements\, and then adding and sewing on the ribbons took time and perseverance. This stretched my students. This caused them to pause and slow down. This allowed for them to make mistakes and then to fix them again. These skirts are not perfect\, they are not sewn by master sewers. They are sewn by teenagers who want to share with you their new learning\, their personal experience and their newfound Indigenous knowledge.

SUMMARY:Open call: Original Canadian art fair at the Huntsville Fall Fair (Sept 21 deadline)
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit your work at the Huntsville Fall Fair\, September 22\, 23 & 24\, 2023. \nThe purpose of fall fairs was to promote agriculture and the arts. As European settlers arrived\, they brought with them their culture and skills. As early as 1879\, art was exhibited at a Canadian fall fair. In 1913\, even members of the Group of Seven were commissioned to design posters for Canada’s largest fall fair\, the CNE. \nThis year\, junior\, intermediate (grade 9 to age 18)\, and adult (19+) artists are invited to participate and contribute to this long tradition by exhibiting at the Huntsville Fall Fair\, which was established in 1882. \nThe categories of competition are:\nA1-1 pastel art of your choice\nA1-2 pencil sketch of your choice\nA1-3 watercolour of your choice\nA1-4 original computer generated art of your choice\nA1-5 wildlife scene\nA1-6 architecture (focus of drawing must be a building)\nA1-7 any painting or drawing not mentioned above\nA1-8 acrylic painting of your choice \nArtist Kate Brown will be adjudicating.\nkatebrownpainting.com\nInstagram: @karenleekatebrownparsed \nAll entries must be delivered to the fair by 12:30 p.m. on Thursday\, September 21\, 2023. All entries must have firm backing and a means of hanging: wire\, hook\, etc. Canvas by itself is not a means of hanging. \nPrize money: 1st – $3.00\, 2nd – $2.00\, 3rd – $1.00 \nThe Huntsville Art Society has generously offered memberships to the first-prize winners of the intermediate and adult divisions. Membership to HAS comes with many advantages that are outlined here. \nMore information and the entry form will be available at huntsvillefallfair.com.

SUMMARY:En Plein Air Art Market (including live outdoor painting and auction)
DESCRIPTION:The inaugural En Plein Air Art Market will take place June 24 from 10am-4pm at River Mill Park in Downtown Huntsville. \nSponsored by Hear Well\, Be Well\, the event consists of a day-long art market featuring local artists along with live outdoor painting and music. Up to 20 local vendors will have their work on display and available for purchase. This original art will include paintings\, jewelry\, ceramics\, clothing\, fashion\, and more. \n“We’re thrilled to bring this new event to Huntsville’s downtown\,” says HfA Executive Director Dan Watson. “It offers opportunities for local artists to sell their work\, brings more visitors to Downtown Huntsville\, and raises funds that will help young artists to develop their talents.” \nThe market also marks the return of the popular En Plein Air painting event. The event\, originally run by Kelly Holinshead of the Shutterbug Gallery\, invites artists and area dignitaries to grab an easel and some paint before choosing an outdoor location downtown to inspire their creations. A few hours later\, participants have to put down their brushes. The paintings are then given a bit of drying time before they are auctioned off to the public at 4pm\, with proceeds going towards the Kareen Burn Visual Arts Scholarship supporting a local student studying visual arts related studies in a post secondary institution or program. \n“Kareen was an HfA Board member and creative force in our community\,” adds Watson. “She loved events like En Plein Air\, and we are honored to raise funds in her name that will support young artists at the beginning of their careers.” \nFor further information and updates\, please visit huntsvillefestival.ca or huntsvilleartcrawl.ca\, or contact Huntsville Festival of the Arts Director of Programs\, Outreach and Education Hannah Naiman at hannah@huntsvillefestival.ca or 705-788-2787. \nThe En Plein Air Art market is the culminating event of the 2023 Huntsville Art CRAWL. Now in its 3rd year\, the CRAWL is a self-guided art tour in downtown Huntsville. Throughout the month of June\, visitors will create their own free art crawl experience by touring local businesses\, galleries and studios which feature exhibits\, demos and interactive experiences by local artists. The program is supported by the Downtown Huntsville BIA and the Huntsville Municipal Accommodation Tax Association.
