The sight of a windblown Jack Pine, the twisted weave of tree roots in the forest, wildlife in their natural habitat, a brilliant sunset or sunrise over a placid lake, a cascade of rushing water over giant boulders; these are some of the emotional triggers that inspire my work as an artist. That visceral response, when goose pimples rise on my skin and my breath comes in short gasps are signs of my muse enticing me back to the easel to share the story of my experience with the world.
Using photos and sketches of the scene, a painting composition is laid out. I knows it’s right when I feel that same gut sensation. Once brush and paint touch the paper or canvas, time loses all meaning. Watching the blank surface transform into a painting often seems magical, as if the paints and brushes are pulling up images hidden in the fibres. When I step back to view the painting and my senses come alive with the memory of the place or time, it’s done.
My style tends towards realism using a variety of mediums – acrylic, oil, watercolour, Chinese and acrylic inks as well as mixed media. Each one offers unique qualities which allows me the freedom to select what best interprets a subject.
I have exhibited throughout Muskoka, Midland, Barrie and Toronto and have work in private collections in Canada, United States and Great Britain and have received private commissions as well as those from Muskoka Libraries, Muskoka Authors Association and Bracebridge Chamber of Commerce.
Through the body of my work, I hope to foster an appreciation for the natural world and increase awareness of our interdependence on all life on our planet. To that end a portion of sales of all paintings goes directly to Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary to support their rehabilitation work in Muskoka.
In 2014 I was honoured to receive the Muskoka YWCA Women of Distinction Award for Arts, Culture and Creative Energy.
